Al Hassan Group strengthens academic-industry interface (09 Nov 09)

As part of Al Hassan Group's commitment to a better industry-academic interaction, a group of students and faculty from the International College of Engg. & Management (formerly Fire and Safety Engineering College) paid a visit to the A'Seeb Wastewater Project site where Al Hassan Engineering Co. SAOG (AHEC) is executing Civil Works for Hyundai Rotem/Haya Water.

Commenting on the visit, Mr Peter Hall, CEO - AHEC said that AHEC wants to strengthen the Academic - Industry Interface so as to help the students to understand the linkages in the academic studies that they are undergoing and the requirements of the industry.

Before the visit, the students were provided with extensive information on various aspects of Health Safety & Environment (HSE) by a team comprising of 3 management members of Al Hassan Group who visited the College.

Mr. Z.H. Farooqui, Head (Civil & Water), AHEC, spoke on construction safety practices. He focused on safety precautions to be taken in any civil construction site. The students were quite amazed to see the state of preparedness of AHEC in terms of taking care of the people, precious resources, and the environment. Mr. K.C. Prabhakaran, Head (HSE), AHEC, highlighted on the onsite and offsite safety aspects. The lecture was made interesting by showing investigation records of various RTA (Road Traffic Accidents) and suggesting the remedies. Mr. Sanjay Khandagle, Manager -Talent Management, Al Hassan Group, spoke on the topic, “Moving from a crisis manager to crisis leader”. He spoke about the physiological preparedness of an individual in terms of handling any eventuality. He highlighted that for effective HSE implementation, a proactive approach was required to envisage eventualities. He stressed on the need to prepare a control and consequence management plan to ensure that incidences do not occur. He also discussed about the competencies required for crisis leaders to handle crisis at any point in time.

All the lectures were much appreciated by the students and they appreciated AHEC’s stellar HSE performance for completing projects without any LTI (Lost Time Incidents).

Later a visit was organized for the final year students and staff of the College to practically see and learn about the safety preparedness of AHEC. It was a practical demonstration given by Mr. Farooqui, Mr. Prabhakaran and the staff of the A’Seeb Wastewater project.

All the students as well as their faculty expressed happiness with the information and knowledge they gained during their visit. Dr. Nidal Siddiqui, Coordinator of the industrial visit commented that he valued Al Hassan’s cooperation in making this visit a success. He expressed gratitude towards Al Hassan Group’s desire to strengthen ties with different educational establishments in the Sultanate.
